The winner of the SCL Essay Prize 2009 is Philip Hutchinson, a student at the College of Law, Moorgate. Philip’s essay on ‘Will Social Networking Services survive only at the expense of privacy?’ was described by one judge as ‘clear, coherent and well structured’ and by another as ‘a vibrant piece of work, with an arresting opening and a good demonstration of legal analysis’.
Philip described himself as thrilled to win the prize. He wins:
• £1,000
• a valuable placement with top IT firm DLA Piper LLP
• free attendance at the SCL Conference in Bath.
A further prize goes to the College of Law; it will be given £1,000 to purchase library books in support of IT law teaching and research.
Philip is a 26-year-old Oxford graduate from Manchester who is now doing the LPC. He has a training contract at Ashursts for September. He looks forward to the opportunity to look at specialist practice in IT when taking up his placement with DLA Piper.
