While the weight to be attached to the report of the Justice Committee of the House of Commons come the day the data protection reform package is finalised is not likely to be great, the Government has responded to its report with a detailed repeat of its initial concerns about the reform proposals. Since the Justice Select Committee’s report, published in November 2012, expressed concerns about the feasibility and costs impact of the package which echoed those of the government (and the ICO), it is no surprise that the Government response to the report consists largely of agreement with the report’s observations. The main interest of that response is therefore in the insight it offers into the UK negotiating position on the data reform package.
