This webinar, designed for professionals navigating Subject Access Request challenges, will cover the legal framework, offer practical advice, and provide tips for litigation. The relevant provisions of the UK GDPR and the DPA 2018 dealing with SARs, including the circumstances in which a data subject’s rights may be restricted, will be explained. We will address some key practical issues to consider when responding to SARs such as locating personal data; handling third-party data; meeting deadlines and assessing exemptions. Finally, we will share our experiences of litigating SARs: how to prepare and run the case so as to minimise the costs (and pain) while maximising the odds of a successful outcome.

Speaker Biographies
Beatrice Collier, Barrister
Beatrice practises in data protection and privacy law, police law, public law, human rights and civil liberties, inquests and public inquiries. She is on the Attorney General’s A Panel of Counsel and won The Legal 500 Public Services Junior of the Year 2023 award.
Beatrice works with clients private individuals and public authorities and understands the importance of excellent crisis and reputation management in this sensitive area. She advises on contentious and non-contentious information law issues in this shifting regulatory and civil litigation environment. Her expertise covers Article 8/privacy, the overlap between privacy and data protection, the conflict between freedom of expression and privacy, breach of confidence and misuse of private information as well as the DPA, the FOIA and the GDPR.
Emma Price, Barrister
Emma practises in data protection and information law, inquests and inquiries, public law, human rights and civil liberties and personal injury. She is on the Attorney General’s A Panel of Counsel (having been on the B and C Panels previously) and sits as an Assistant Coroner for the City of London. Emma won The Legal 500 Junior of the Year 2024 award.
Emma acts for a wide range of clients, including central government departments, chief officers of police and private sector clients, on a variety of complex and sensitive data protection and information law issues arising from the GDPR, DPA and FOIA, including privacy, breach of confidence and misuse of private information claims, which often also engage Article 8.
Alex Ustych, Barrister
Alex Ustych specialises in data protection and privacy law, with a particular emphasis on cybersecurity and AI. Alex is on the Attorney General’s B Panel of Counsel and ranked as a leading junior in The Legal 500 for Data Protection. His clients include technology companies, charities, regulators, talent agencies and national newspapers. Alex has a particular interest in the impact of emerging technologies (such as AI) on individuals’ data protection and privacy rights. He advises companies in novel industry areas (such as Virtual Reality) as well as public bodies in respect of major digital projects, including on international data transfers. As a member of the Public Tech Committee of the Society for Computers & Law, he is at the cutting edge of legal developments in technology. He also delivers talks on topics such as AI alongside industry experts and is speaking on the Artificial Intelligence and Ethics panel for the Bar Council’s Kenya Development Visit in December.
