Generative AI (GenAI) has undeniably made a profound impact on the legal industry, and various parts of the public sector are actively engaging with the benefits that GenAI can bring. Large language models (LLMs), designed to process extensive text data, have significantly influenced the sector, which heavily relies on language. The nuances in legal terminology are critical, and achieving precision is equally vital in developing effective instructions for AI models. For example, think of the difference between “shall” (mandatory) and “should” (advisory) in accurately reflecting legal intentions.

Prompt engineering is the art of crafting precise and effective instructions for AI models to generate desired outputs. Legal prompt engineering involves creating these prompts with a focus on the nuances and specificity required in legal language to enhance AI’s utility in legal tasks.

Join us for the inaugural event for SCL’s Public Sector Tech Committee for an enlightening and interactive session on “Legal Prompt Writing for the Public Sector”. This session will provide a foundational understanding of how LLM’s work and demystify the concept and relevance of prompt engineering, providing effective use cases and examples, specifically tailored to the work of and challenges faced by those working within the public sector.  During the workshop, attendees will engage in practical activities focused on creating, testing, and iterating prompts for streamlining legal research, drafting documents, summarisation, and optimising comms.

Panel Discussion Topics:

  • Transformative Potential: Explore how GenAI can optimise legal applications such as contract analysis and drafting
  • Best Practices: Learn best practices for creating effective prompts and see impactful examples focussed on the work of the public sector
  • Hands-On Practice: Engage in hands-on practice with common prompt writing techniques and approaches, ensuring you can write prompts that yield precise and useful outputs
