The SCL Trainee Group was created so that trainees could take initiative to design their own legal training. Through hosting events and creating knowledge resources, the Group provides a space where trainees can explore the intersection between law and technology in creative ways that are pitched at a useful level for career-starters. The Trainee Group is always open to new members and new ideas!
Fariha Chowdhury
Trainee Solicitor, Bristows LLP; Co-Chair of the SCL Trainee Group
Fariha is a third-seat trainee solicitor at Bristows, currently working with the Patent Litigation team. Following exposure to various areas of work within her training contract, Fariha has a keen interest in how AI intersects with areas like intellectual property rights, data protection, and commercial contracts. She is also curious about the broader impact AI will have on the future, especially in terms of how it might reshape existing legal frameworks and practices and how the use of AI can enhance the legal system. She is also particularly interested in how the use of AI will transform the way in which lawyers approach complex legal issues.
Guy Mathews
Trainee Solicitor, DLA Piper; Co-Chair of the SCL Trainee Group
Guy is a second-year trainee solicitor at DLA Piper with experience in its Technology & Sourcing, and Environment teams. Guy has assisted both public and private sector clients with commercial and technology agreements, with sustainability reporting in data centres, and has co-authored articles and other materials on AI in the defence sector. Whilst on secondment with a multinational client, Guy has worked with generative AI tools used in marketing and compliance processes. He is passionate about understanding and promoting the potential of technology to enhance the delivery of legal services.
Evie Duggan
Solicitor Apprentice, DLA Piper
Evie is a first-year Solicitor Apprentice at DLA Piper, currently sitting with the Real Estate Finance and Sport Finance team in the London office. While studying, she wrote academic essays exploring technological advancements and their intersectionality with law and is interested in how law firms keep apace to changes in an environment that is constantly evolving.
Hannah El-Gazzar
Trainee Solicitor, Fieldfisher
Hannah El-Gazzar is a trainee solicitor at Fieldfisher. Hannah did her first seat in Personal Injury and Medical Negligence and is about to start her second seat in Tech & Date. Tech and data are areas of interest to Hannah due to having previously been a paralegal prior to joining Fieldfisher at The Financial Times and Paragon Customer Communications, giving her exposure to a realm of tech and data issues she enjoyed solving for these businesses. Outside of work Hannah enjoys exercising, watching films and baking!
Alex Guard
Trainee Solicitor, BNP Paribas
Alex is an in-house Trainee Solicitor at BNP Paribas and currently sits within their Digital and IP team. He has prior legal experience working in FinTech and in September 2022, he started a part-time masters in AI Ethics at the University of Cambridge. He is particularly interested in the intersection between AI and the laws of intellectual property, data protection, and contract.
Patrick Newlands
Trainee Solicitor, Bristows LLP
Patrick is a first seat trainee solicitor at Bristows LLP, currently sitting with the Patent Litigation team. He has previous experience working for an aerospace engineering company and his MEng research project focused on the development of various machine learning algorithms. Patrick has a particular interest in how AI will interface with the law in the future, particularly surrounding ownership and legal personalities
Ivan Panton
Trainee Solicitor, Clifford Chance
Ivan is a trainee solicitor at Clifford Chance, sitting in the Derivatives and Structured Products team, having joined in February 2022 sitting first in Litigation & Dispute Resolution and then spending 6 months in Brussels working in Antitrust. He previously worked in several cyber security consulting roles, including research and development into AI capabilities and cryptography. He is Secretary of the specialist Committee on AI for the City of London Law Society, and sits on the legal advisory board for an innovative tech-driven arbitration start-up; pinqDR. Outside of work Ivan enjoys kickboxing, tennis, and is starting to re-learn the piano.
Kieran Teo
Trainee Solicitor, DLA Piper
Kieran is a second year Trainee Solicitor at DLA Piper, and has experience in Finance and Aviation Litigation. Seeing the impact Technology can have in process improvement during his stint in the Singaporean Army, he co-founded the Legal Innovation Society while studying for his LLB in Queen Mary, University of London. He has written articles about Legal Tech, and is interested to see how technology and AI will change finance law.
